Getty is one of many projects funded by the Getty trust and is renowned for its stunning architecture, gardens and incredible views over the city. The Getty Center is located in the Brentwood area of the city and features pre-20th century European paintings, drawings, sculptures and lit-up manuscripts. Outside, there is also artwork displayed on terraces and in the grounds of the garden, including the Vincent Van Gogh painting Irises.
Los Angeles Zoo and Botanical Gardens is a 133 acre zoo that is home to 1,100 animals from over 250 species, 29 of which are endangered. There's also an expansive botanical collection including a few planted gardens with over 800 different plant species and over 7,400 individual plants. Some of the highlights of the zoo include the LAIR (Living Amphibians, Invertebrates and Reptiles) and the Elephants of Asia and Campo Gorilla Reserve. You can even watch tamarins play in the treetops and come face-to-face with toucans and tapirs as you walk through the tropical rainforest.
Griffith Observatory opened in 1935 and has become one of the city's most popular attractions. The Observatory is situated above Los Feliz on the south-facing slope of Mount Hollywood and provides some of the best views over the city. There's plenty to see and do here including the Samuel Oschin Planetarium, Zeiss Telescope, Goettlieb Transit Corridor and Leonard Nimoy Event Horizon.
Griffith Park is one of the largest urban parks in North America, spanning over 4,300 acres. If you'd prefer horseback riding to walking the park, get in the saddle at the Sunset Ranch Hollywood, which is the only horse ranch situated in the greater LA region. You can choose from guided rides of the trails, learn to ride from scratch or opt for a boarding package. Just a short one hour ride into the park features spectacular views of the Hollywood sign.
