Once upon a time, Cancún was a fisherman’s island that no one cared about. All of that changed in the 1970s when the Mexican government decided to develop Cancún into a tourist development. Ever since then, Cancún has flourished; tourists flock to Cancún for the beautiful beaches, fascinating archaeological ruins, world-class snorkeling and scuba diving and five-star hotels.
Cancún is home to some spectacular coral reefs and some very unusual man made “underwater museums,” so make sure that you have a chance to go scuba diving or snorkeling. Other water activities include swimming with dolphins, jet skiing and boating. If you’ve had enough of the water, try golfing at the Moon Spa and Golf Club or the Riviera Cancún Golf and Spa. Shoppers should make sure to check out Market 28, Market 23 and La Isla. If you’ve come to see the ancient Mayan ruins, visit El Rey, El Meco, Cobá, Muyil, Xcaret and Kohunlich. After a long day exploring Cancún, relax by visiting one of the city’s many spas; Cancún spas offer both modern treatments and native Mayan healing rituals.
