Madrid, the capital city of Spain, has a colorful history and a rich and vibrant culture. Since 1561, the city has been the political base of the country and home to the monarchy, and in the years following Charles III, it started to transform into a deserving capital city. Due to the presence of the monarchy, the city was often the origin of any uprisings or complaints from the civilian population. The country went through a civil war from 1936-39, and the city was the base for the Republicans. There was an industrial boom from 1959 to the early 1970s and the influx of workers meant the city expanded significantly to accommodate them and since then it has become one of the world's major capital cities. Like any capital city, it has numerous cultural and tourist attractions.
