Today, Johannesburg is home to 3 million people, but officially, a little over 100 years old, since people from all over globe only started flooding in after gold was discovered in 1886. The city is a diverse melting pot of cultures and social backgrounds, and after a long and bumpy journey, Johannesburg has grown into a vibrant cosmopolitan city and the economic center of South Africa. Recent history can be found at the Apartheid Museum, the Johannesburg Art Gallery, and the Hector Pieterson Museum.
Scenes depicting events surrounding the 1976 anti-Afrikaans Soweto Uprising are shown here and may help visitors understand some of the city's former difficulties. Soweto used to be a separate township outside Johannesburg, but as the city expanded the township was incorporated into the city boundary. Nelson Mandela's former home, Mandela House, is there and contains photographs and other memorabilia owned by the former President.
Johannesburg is an exciting and vibrant city, and if you know where to look and where to go, you will find something for everyone.
