Travel Destinations Based On Your Personality Type
According to the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator, each person is simply a combination of eight characteristics. Either introverted or extroverted, thinking or feeling, judging or perceiving and sensing or intuitive; a simple test reveals your true personality type. It’s thought that we would all have improved relationships, a more successful career and even a better holiday if we considered our personality type when making these life choices. So, when it comes to the perfect holiday, what are the ideal travel destinations based on your Myers-Briggs personality type? We look at a few of these personality types and suggest the perfect holiday for each.
What are the types of travelers?
The Crafter
Crafters are introverted, independent and curious. They enjoy hands-on activities, problem solving and new experiences. Results-oriented, they want to do something that can be quantified, but will also get bored if it’s not interesting enough. The perfect holiday for a Crafter is an active holiday, where there are plenty of opportunities for new experiences within a carefully planned itinerary. Excellent choices include an outdoor activity holiday on the Pembrokeshire Coast in Wales, a boating holiday in Croatia or snorkeling, diving and trekking in Hawaii.
The Artist
Artists are introverted types who enjoy practical activities, but unlike Crafters they prefer to enjoy the day without an itinerary, often choosing to change plans at the last minute. Artists live in the moment, enjoy solitude and tend to be well-attuned with their environment. The perfect holiday for an Artist would be an outdoor activity holiday with a flexible program. Learning forestry skills in the Black Forest of Germany or a farm stay in New Zealand are perfect choices for Artists.
The Advocate
Advocates tend to have high morals, idealistic views, are sensitive to others and generally reserved in nature. They are one of the rarer types, representing just 1-3% of the population. A holiday for an Advocate would be somewhere that allows for deep contemplation and creativity, such as an eco-friendly walking holiday in the Lake District or the Alps.
The Director
Directors are natural leaders, who find it easy to take charge of a situation and make logical steps to find reasonable resolutions. Rigid and rule-abiding, they are well-suited to holidays in cities which reflect their orthodox personalities. The perfect holiday for a Director will be fully planned by themselves. Options include a city break to Stuttgart, Munich, or Frankfurt, the more conservative cities in Germany where there are plenty of museums and well-run infrastructures. For longer-haul trips, Tokyo or Ontario are also excellent choices. A director will prefer to travel with a group or family whom they can ‘lead’.
The Performer
Performers are fun-loving, center-of-attention types, who are also resourceful, optimistic, and like to live in the moment. The perfect holidays for performers are destinations where there are lots of new people to meet and opportunities to express oneself. Good options are seaside resorts where there's a range of daytime activities such as water-sports and shopping, as well as a buzzing nightlife. Top choices include Mykonos, Ibiza, Los Angeles, and Sydney.
The Caregiver
Caregivers are fiercely loyal friends who enjoy the company of others and tend to see the good in everyone. Extroverted and outgoing they are also highly sociable. Their perfect holiday destination is camping in a large group, the location is not as important as the opportunity to spend time with friends and loved ones. However, the more well-equipped and beautiful the campsite the happier they will be. Some of the countries and regions best geared-up for group camping includes much of Western Europe, notably the Netherlands, the UK, France and Germany, as well as, Vancouver Island, Utah in the United States, and New Zealand.
The Champion
Caring, charismatic and enthusiastic, Champions need to be constantly entertained, but prefer plans to be spontaneous and flexible rather than rigorously planned out. That means they are well-suited to destinations where opportunities for fun and adventure are plentiful, but not mandatory. They also love the chance to help others. A long, largely unplanned tour of Southeast Asia is well-suited to a Champion, as it allows them to change their plans at will, meet new people and discover new places, but also seek out opportunities to volunteer, relax, and reflect.
The Commander
This rarest of personally types only occurs in around 1 in 50 people. Commanders are highly sociable, careful planners who rate logic above emotion. Stubborn, but self-assured and usually right anyway, Commanders are well-suited for holidays that require a carefully planned itinerary with plenty of opportunities to mingle with new and old friends. As naturally intelligent types they enjoy high art and culture. A trip to Vienna, Paris or St. Petersburg are each ideal for a Commander, who will ensure that every single one of the city’s huge number of cultural attractions are carefully ticked-off.
