Signature Soups Around the World
Craving something savory and warm for the colder weather? Check out some of these signature soups from countries all around the world. From the famous Vietnamese Pho to Mexican Pozole, the options are endless!
Pho - Vietnam
Pho is a famous Vietnamese soup that is made from beef stock and other spices. It is served with flat rice noodles, different cuts of beef, and herbs. Typically pho is made from beef but can also be made from chicken stock.
Lohikeitto - Finland
Lohikeitto is a creamy salmon soup in Sweden and Finland. The soup itself is made from fish stock and cream that gives it a comforting buttery feel. Inside the soup contains chunks of salmon fillet, soft diced potatoes, and carrots. Then topped with dill and served with a side of lemon wedges and bread.
Gumbo - African Inspired
Gumbo is a very popular stew in the state of Louisiana. It is made from strong savory meat stock and shellfish along with vegetables like celery, bell peppers, and onions. It is said to be inspired by the African Orka Soup that suggests gumbo was originally made with Okra.
Tom Yum - Thailand
Tom Yum is a signature hot and sour (and spicy) soup in Thailand. It is cooked with shrimp, vegetables, and lemongrass. Tom Yum comes from the two different Thai words “Tom” which means the boiling process, and “Yam” meaning a spicy and sour salad which reflects the soup's flavors.
French Onion Soup - France
This French soup is made from beef broth and (of course) onions. The onions are caramelized with butter making this a rich and warm soup. It is served with a piece of bread with melted cheese on top or croutons.
Minestrone - Italy
When you think of Minestrone, think of pasta but with soup! This Italian broth is made with a mix of vegetables. Common ingredients found in this soup are beans, onion, celery, and carrots but can really be made with any vegtables. But pasta or rice is a must.
Miso Soup - Japan
Miso soup is a traditional Japanese soup made from a dashi stock with miso paste blended in. Dashi stock is a type of fish stock used in Japanese cooking. The Miso Soup dish is usually served with soft tofu and bits of seaweed. It is a simple classic soup great on the side of a meal.
Dutch Split Pea Soup - Netherlands
This is a hearty Dutch soup made with lots of vegetables (especially peas) and pork. It has a stew-like consistency and is known as the “winter soup” of the Netherlands. Traditionally served with rookworst which is a type of smoked sausage.
Sundubu Jjigae - Korea
Also known as spicy tofu soup, this is a spicy traditional Korean dish is made from silken tofu, vegetables, and optional meat and seafood. It is made from gochugaru (Korean red pepper powder) and is usually eaten with a hot bowl of rice and other banchan on the side.
Pozole - Mexico
This tasty and slowly cooked Mexican soup is made with pork and dried chiles. It is a "hominey" dish which is made with coarsely ground corn to make grits that give the Pozole a stew like texture. The soup is then garshiinshed with cabbage, chili, radish, lime, and/or avocado.
