Lufthansa CityLine

Germany's flagship carrier's city-to-city service

With over 320 flights every day to around 80 destinations, Lufthansa CityLine is an operation on par with its illustrious parent company. At a strategic level, it's a network of connections for Lufthansa, connecting the continent's passengers with two of its global hub airports in Munich and Frankfurt, and a world of onward travel. But it also serves a comprehensive network map in its own right, offering one of Europe's foremost business and leisure services.

It's a long way from the company's modest origins, operating short-hop services along the north German coast, back in the 1950s. The company expanded hugely and by 1993, it was rebranded as Lufthansa CityLine, proving itself to be one of the German national airline's most successful ventures. A thoroughly state-of-the-art fleet of aircraft now includes the Embraer 190 and 195, as well as one of the latest Bombardier mid-size jets, with ranges of around 2,500km. It's the perfect fleet profile for the airline's short and mid-range European operations, and allows it to fulfill Lufthansa's targets of efficiency and environmental performance.

In total, nearly eight million passengers choose Lufthansa CityLine services every year, and this is due in part to the impressive coverage. It's no surprise that established business capitals like Milan, Berlin, Paris, and Zurich are all well served, but the full network is broader, with flights as far afield as Aberdeen, Chisinau, Palermo, and Minsk.

As you would expect from Germany's leading operator, the short and medium-haul services provided on the European network meet the standards of a global airline. Even Economy class travel is comfortable, thanks to details like the slimmer design of the seat backs, which allows for a little extra legroom. Service is up to the level on which Lufthansa's reputation is built. Business class includes priority check-in and lounge services at major airports, as well as early boarding. Once shown to your seat, you'll find extra-comfortable leather upholstery with more space beside you to spread out, as well as a fine in-flight meal.
As part of the prestigious Star Alliance airline group, the carrier offers its frequent fliers a membership plan which allows them to use their accrued flight miles anywhere on the Star Alliance network.

Practical Information

If you're one of those people who would always like a little extra time once at the airport, it's good to know that Lufthansa CityLine gives you the option of checking-in online and printing a boarding pass, or simply doing it all on your mobile device. Alternatively, you can use the automatic check-in points, or make your way to the desk and do it the traditional way.

  • On some services, you have the option of Economy Light - the hand-luggage-only tariff.

  • Economy Classic and Flex tickets allow you one item of carry-on luggage (to a maximum of 8 kg) and one checked item (to a maximum of 23 kg).

  • Business travelers are allowed two carry-on bags and two items of hold luggage, up to 32 kg.
