Specializing in connections between North America and Europe (via the beautiful island that it calls home), Icelandair has an excellent reputation for reliability and safety, and has become a popular carrier in the North Atlantic region. Owned by the Icelandair Group of private investors, the company operates according to the motto ""reliable flights and exceptional service"" - keeping things neat and simple.
Based out of its hub at Keflavik International Airport, the airline serves plenty of U.S. destinations, including Anchorage, Chicago, Portland (OR), Seattle, Minneapolis-St Paul, Washington D.C., New York, Philadelphia, Boston, and Orlando. Travelers can head via Keflavik to a range of attractive destinations, such as London, Paris, Berlin, and Barcelona.
The airline isn't a global giant, flying around 4 million passengers per year, and it isn't a member of any worldwide alliance, either. Instead, it acts as a""stand alone" airline, with no codesharing options. However, members of Saga Club, the Icelandair frequent flier program, can use the points they earn with partners like JetBlue, and Alaska Airlines. So there are plenty of connections with other carriers and services.
The Icelandair fleet includes 36 aircraft, and is made up primarily of Boeing 757-200 craft, although a single 757-300 is included, alongside four 767-300 models and a few 737 MAX craft as well. Safety-wise, the airline constantly rates among the safest low-cost carriers, and has been involved in no major incidents in recent years.
Icelandair isn't known for its premium features, but does provide an enjoyable and comfortable travel experience in all classes. Icelandair's Classes of Service include Premium and Economy, with special perks in both classes for Saga Club members.
Icelandair Premium Class
In Premium Class, the seat pitch is above average for the industry, with a maximum pitch of 102cm (40-inches). Premium passengers enjoy priority boarding, extra leg room, a greater checked baggage allowance (see below), gate to gate WiFi for two devices, access to Saga Lounges, and the chance to earn Saga Points. Premium Flex fares add extra flexibility regarding rebooking and cancelations, for a slightly higher fee. All Premium passengers also receive meals in-flight, along with complimentary beverages.
Icelandair Economy Class
Economy seats with Icelandair come with a minimum seat pitch of 86cm (34-inches), so it ranks among the roomiest of all low-cost airlines. In Standard Economy, passengers don't enjoy free meals, although non-alcoholic drinks are included, as well as a wide range of in-fight entertainment. Cheaper seats can also be booked as Economy Flex varieties, which add more flexibility about scheduling flights. These tickets also bundle in gate-to-gate WiFi for two devices.
On-board Services
All travelers with Icelandair benefit from in-air WiFi, although not everyone has free access. Unless it is included with tickets, WiFi will carry extra fees, and represents the equivalent of 3G on the ground. Entertainment is provided for all, including music, movies, and magazines. Headphones can be purchased if needed for a small fee.
Icelandair Lounges
Saga Club members can access comfortable lounge seating at Keflavik Airport, although the airline doesn't maintain its own spaces at other international airports. Keflavik's lounge can be handy for flights with a change, and includes shower facilities with soap and towels provided, a kids play area, free WiFi, and much more.
When you fly with Icelandair, online check-in begins 24 hours prior to flying for all flights out of the U.S.A. (and 36 hours for return flights from Europe). The company advises passengers to arrive at the airport 2.5 hours before take-off, to ensure that the experience is seamless.
Premium Class
Travelers in Saga Premium Class are permitted to check-in 2 bags, each one weighing no more than 70 lbs (32 kg).
Passengers can also take 1 carry-on bag weighing 22 lbs (10 kg)and one "personal item" with standard tickets. Premium Flex fares allow passengers to carry-on two 22 lbs (10 kg) bags, as well as a personal item.
Economy Class
In standard Economy, passengers can check-in a single bag weighing 50 lbs (23 kg). If passengers choose Economy Light tickets, there is no checked baggage allowance.
All Economy passengers can carry-on a single 22 lbs (10 kg) bag as well as a personal item.
When traveling with kids, strollers are included free of charge, don't contribute to baggage allowances, and child seats can also be brought on board without extra fees. One lap child can be transported per adult passenger with no additional cost, and all childrn up to aged 11 receive a free meal and juice during flights.
Non-refundable excess baggage fees apply if items breach Icelandair's guidelines, and there are special fees for sporting items such as skis, surfboards, golf clubs, or angling equipment. These special fees will keep costs below simple excess baggage bills, so they are worth exploring. They also apply to musical instruments.
Saga Club members can also enhance their bookings. Both Silver and Gold members can cash in points for excess baggage (as well as for car hire, on-board purchases and even charity donations).
