Fly with Finnair

Finland's largest airline, Finnair, headquarters are directly at Helsinki Airport, in Vantaa, and the airport itself is the airline's most important hub.

More than half of its shares are owned by the Finish government and it is continuously rated as one of the safest airlines worldwide. Being a member of the Oneworld alliance of airlines it transports close to 12 million passengers each year to a total of over 120 destinations in Europe, North America, and Asia.

Founded in 1923, Finnair expanded quickly and has now a fleet of over 80 aircraft, consisting, in the majority, of different Airbus models. Airbus A319 to A321 are mainly used on European and domestic flights whilst the Airbus A330 and A350 serve on intercontinental flights. Chicago, Miami, and New York are some of the US departure airports that Finnair connects to international destinations such as Helsinki, Oslo and Hong Kong. Madrid is, after Helsinki, another major hub for Finnair and destinations in Asia and Australia are so easily reached.

Finnair operated its first flight between Europe and New York City in 1969, today it connects Chicago, Miami and San Francisco via Helsinki to the rest of the world. Many of these routes are operated all-year-round and New York now sees daily flights to and from Europe. Another important development is the increased number of flights into the Caribbean and Latin America, for example to Panama.

Finnair's frequent-flyer program is known as Finnair Plus and exists on five different levels, depending on the accumulated points. There is even a special program, called Junior, for underage passengers. Privileges of these programs include priority check-in and boarding. Points can be accumulated by mileage, but also earned by using car rental companies and hotels that have partnered with Finnair. Finnair is best-known for its high level of customer care, modern aircraft fleet and is one of the safest airlines to fly with.

Finnair Travel Experience

Finnair offers its passengers the choice of two cabin classes: Business and Economy. Passengers in Business Class on long-distance flights can enjoy the extensive, personal in-flight entertainment system and all Airbus A350 XWB have flat-bed seats in this class. Priority is given to passengers traveling in this class when it comes to check-in, security, and boarding plus complimentary internet access for up to one hour depending on the flight destination. Complimentary meals, accompanied by carefully selected wines, are also served.

Passengers in Economy Class can enjoy complimentary coffee, tea, and blueberry juice on flights in Europe and to the Middle-East and complimentary meals and beverages on other international flights. Internet access, as well as other food and drink, are available for purchase and travelers have the option to book Economy Comfort seats with more legroom and space in this class.

Helsinki airport has no less than three Finnair operated lounges, one in the Schengen area of the airport, the other two in the non-Schengen area. The first one is reserved for travelers that are Gold or Platinum members of Finnair's Plus program, Sapphire or Emerald members of Oneworld, or who are traveling in Business class. From the other two, one has the same requirements, but also welcomes Business class passengers from Japan Airlines, whilst the second is exclusively for Oneworld Emerald and Finnair Plus Platinum members. As a bonus, both these lounges feature a Finnish sauna.

Finnair Check-in & Baggage

Online check-in is available 24 hours before departure to or from the United States and 36 hours for flights between all other destinations. You can do an online check-in comfortably from any mobile device or computer or use the Finnair app. Your online check-in needs to be completed 75 minutes before departure for flights to and from the USA at the latest. If you prefer, you can also check-in at the airport whilst using the dedicated bag drop point for your luggage.

Arriving at the airport in good time is important for a tranquil start of your journey. Check-in has to be completed 45 min before departure for domestic and inter-European flights and 60 to 75 minutes for all others. Bear also in mind that security checks take their time, so add to this at least 1 hour for domestic and inter-European and 2 hours for all other flights.

Additional Information

If your luggage includes items like sports equipment or musical instruments that exceed the weight and size allowance on your ticket, then you can purchase an additional allowance with prices varying between 20 and 70 USD depending on your route. If you are part of Finnair's frequent flyer program, you can pay for extra luggage also with your points. Finnair makes sure that children travel with at least one parent in the neighboring seat and a foldable push-chair and an airline approved seat can be brought free of charge.
