AirBaltic was established on 28th August 1995 when a joint venture was signed between Scandinavian Airlines and the Latvian State, with operations starting in October 1995. In 1996, the airline took delivery of its first Avro RJ70 and joined the SAS's (Scandinavian Airlines) frequent-flyer club as a partner. In 1999, the airline replaced all of its Saab 340 planes with Fokker 50s and later that year began operating under the European Aviation Operating Standards. In 2006, the first Boeing 737-300 joined the fleet and in 2007, the airline introduced online check-in for some destinations.
Since 2010, the airline has undergone a period of restructuring and modernisation, with the airline taking delivery of Bombardier CS300 planes in November 2006. The airline is looking to add new aircraft from 2020 onwards, confirming its status as a successful modern airline. It operates year-round by offering seasonal flights from Vilnius, Tallinn, and Riga, mainly to leisure and metropolitan areas in Europe. The airline won the ANNIES Award in 2010 as Europe's largest flag carrier with new routes and has been recognized by OAG as the "most punctual" airline in the world two years running (2014 and 2015).
AirBaltic offers both Economy and Business service classes. Within the Economy class, passengers may opt between Basic and Premium tickets. The Basic ticket is suitable for passengers traveling with hand luggage that are only looking for the best value for money along with no-frills air travel. The Premium ticket is a comfort class that includes advance seat reservation, business class check-in, fast-tracked security control at Riga airport, and checked baggage. For the best value, passengers may search for the lowest fares on the website by selecting the 'Show the low fare calendar' box if it appears when searching for flights. Here, passengers can search for dates and prices that are best suited to their travel plans and budgets. A useful feature of the booking process is the 'Freeze My Price' option, which lets you book your flight but postpone payment for up to 48 hours. This is a useful option for when it's necessary to double checking hotel and destination details prior to finalizing the booking with payment (For this option, a small up-front payment of 4.99 euros is payable on an AirBaltic payment card or 10.98 Euros for other payment options and is non-refundable). The airline also runs a frequent-flyer loyalty program called PINS.
