Air India, began operating on October 15, 1932. It was known as Tata Airlines after its founder, J.R.D. Tata. But after the Second World War, the airline was renamed Air India and became a public limited company. The airline became a wholly owned subsidiary of Tata Group on January 27, 2022.

The central and primary hub of Air India is in the Indira International Airport in New Delhi. However, it also has a secondary hub in Mumbai Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport.

Air India operates flights to both domestic and international destinations and is in the process of providing more connections. Some of the most popular routes serviced by Air India include; New York to Delhi, San Francisco to Delhi, Chicago to Delhi, Newark to Hyderabad, Newark to Ahmedabad, and Newark to Mumbai. The airline has a fleet of of the following aircrafts in service Boeing 787-8, B777-200LR, B777-300ER; Airbus A319, A320, A320NEO, A321.

In the year 2014, Air India became a member of the Star Alliance. Since its formation, the airline has strived to stick to its mission statement of “Providing safe, secure, affordable, and sustainable air travel with access to various parts of India and the world.”

Air India Travel Experience

Air India endeavors to provide comfort to clients throughout their travel. To make this happen, the airline offers personalized support in four passenger cabins: First-class, Executive/Business, Premium Economy, and Economy (depending on routes and aircraft, cabin classes may differ). These comforts range from the amount of space given to individual passengers, inflight entertainment, and their foods and delicacies offered. For all passengers, there are well-positioned movie screens for travelers’ viewing pleasure. Besides, international flights allow travelers to choose from a wide selection of Indian and international cuisine. Complimentary wines and drinks are offered on international flights, among other refreshments.

India's first carrier to service 4 cabin classes

As of May 15, 2023, Air India is India's first airline carrier to offer four cabin cabin services. The four class cabin will be offered on select routes serviced on the Boeing 777-200LR aircraft.

First Class

The first-class tickets come with plenty of extras for travelers who seek to travel in style. The 180-degree recliner seats are typically aisle or window seats, which allow passengers to have pleasant views. The first-class passengers also get to enjoy spaces with ethnic interior design for a personalized and homely feel. Additionally, first-class passengers get to choose from a wide range of cocktails to pair with their entrees.

Executive/Business Class

Air India offers a conducive environment for executive class travelers. Some of the exceptional amenities offered to the business class passengers include a lounge facility with a work station, spacious cabins, and plush seats during their travel. Furthermore, passengers have the option of choosing from sumptuous entrees and wine. In addition, they also receive exclusive check-in facilities, as well as being accorded aisle and window seats as well.

Premium Economy Class

Travelers who want to enjoy a lot more space, comfort and convenience over Economy Class fares can fly in style on Air India's premium economy option. Premium Economy passengers are able to check-in at dedicated ticket counters, priority-tagged luggage, and priority boarding. Once onboard, passengers will have the chance to enjoy their welcome drink on one of the aircraft's featured 48 leather-upholstered seats with 19 inches of width, 38 inches of seat pitch, adjustable leg/foot rest, and winged headrests. In addition, a complimentary TUMI amenity kit is provided to each passenger and passengers can also receive a noise-cancelling headphone for use during the flight while enjoying Air India's in-flight entertainment system.

In the economy class section, there are a wide range of onboard facilities to keep travelers entertained. The airline offers temperature control systems and improved illumination for those who like to read during their flight, as well as seat back movie screens. On all the airline’s flights, passengers get to enjoy complimentary refreshments and meals. International passengers, however, have the option of choosing between intercontinental or Indian cuisine.

Airport Lounge

Being a member of Star Alliance, Air India has an international standard lounge where everyone can rest as they await their flight. The India Air lounge is divided into two: the first-class lounge and the business class lounge. Some of the amenities provided in both lounges include a large TV area, newspapers, magazines, and a wide selection of local and foreign foods. Flying Returns is Air India's frequent flyer programme. As a member of Flying Returns, passengers get to earn reward points while flying with Air India or any other Star Alliance airlines. These reward miles can then be used to redeem flight tickets or bonus reward points.

India Air offers travelers a variety of online services. Passengers can manage flight reservations, book hotels, check-in, make payments, and view their flight status using computers, smartphone devices, and tablets.

Online check-ins are possible on Air India's pre-flight for ticketed passengers. Check-in with or without a luggage is permitted 12 hours before the scheduled time of departure until 2 hours before the departure.

The sum of the length, width and height of each piece of checked luggage must not exceed 62 inches or 158 centimeters for Air India flights.

Additional Information

If travelers want to take oversized baggage, including TVs and sports equipment on board an Air India flight, it must be under 62 inches in total linear dimensions. Applicable oversize baggage and excess baggage fee will be applicable based on situation.
