Things to do in Tokyo

Being such a culturally significant metropolis, Tokyo has a wealth of must-see sights and experiences for visitors.

For History Buffs

An important historical site is the Meiji Shinto Shrine, which is known for its looming gate and woodland setting. The shrine is dedicated to the late 19th century emperor Meiji who welcomed the West to Japan. With its serene and serious architecture and atmosphere, the shrine retains its religious significance without becoming too much of a tourist trap. For seriously envy-inducing holiday pictures, be sure to bring your camera to take snaps of the jaw-dropping 40 foot high torii gate that welcomes visitors and the 1500 year old cypress trees that populate the 200 acre park surrounding the shrine.

For nature lovers

If you love peaceful walks in green surroundings and wildlife spotting, Kasai Rinkai Park is well worth a visit. This beautiful park opened back in 1989 and has since been delighting visitors with stunning views of its two man-made islands, a well-maintained aquarium and a bird sanctuary. There's a viewing tower to help you get undisturbed views of the various birds. You can get up close and personal with many species of fish at the aquarium including sharks, bonito and tuna, as well as excellent exhibits of penguins and other seabirds.

For party animals

The famed district of Roppongi is situated in Minato and is renowned for its wealthy Roppongi Hills area and a bustling nightlife scene. Roppongi is something of a cultural hotpot, with people from all walks of life drawn here by the fantastic nightlife options.

For foodies

If you love good food (and aren't scared of heights) head to Tokyo's Sky Tree tower located in the tallest freestanding tower in the world. The tower opened in May 2012 and is predominantly used as a broadcasting tower. With over 310 shops and restaurants, the Sky Tree Tower is becoming a must-visit tourist attraction in its own right and is great for sampling the city's delicious delicacies including sushi and ramen.

For animation fans

At the Ghibli Museum you'll find a showcase of the work of the famous Japanese animation studio, Ghibli. The museum exhibits both permanent displays and rotating annual displays, which have included famous animation studios such as Aardman Animation. The museum's newest exhibit takes a look back over the past exhibitions, revisiting key concepts and casting a fresh look over the best presentations. There's also a mock animation studio, perfect for animation fans to get learn more about the end-to-end animation process.

For techies

Tokyo is well-known as one of the most technologically-advanced cities in the world. The National Museum of Emerging Science and Innovation, also known as the Miraikan, showcases the best of Japan's cutting-edge technology. Get up close and personal with mind-blowing technology you could only dream of, such as robots and science-meets-art theatre productions that blur the line between science fiction and reality.

Hanakawado Hakidaore-ichi Shoe Market

Shoe lovers will adore a visit to the Hanakawado Hakidaore-ichi Shoe Market, a large street market held to keep the local shoe industry alive and well. There are usually between 30 to 40 retailers and wholesalers selling their wares at stalls in and around Hanakawado Park offering everything from leather goods to scarves and handbags at very good prices.
