If you are planning a visit to Mumbai, where to stay is going to be one of your first considerations. Mumbai is the capital of the state of Maharashtra, as well as, India's largest city. Formerly known as Bombay, it is a sought after destination with accommodation that ranges from luxurious hotels to affordable family-friendly hotels and well-known chains.
Choosing where to stay in Mumbai depends on what you would like to see and do. From the famous waterfront of Marine Drive to the iconic Gateway of India, there really is something for everyone. Mumbai is the capital of the state of Maharashtra, a hub of commerce and industry and, of course, a fine choice for a short or long stay. Its ancient traditions and colonial history have resulted in a cultural melting pot where everyone is welcome. Did you know that Mumbai is made up of seven islands?
First taken over by the Portuguese in 1498, the islands that make up modern-day Mumbai were handed over to Catherine de Baganza as part of her dowry.
Mumbai is a massive city, and the city and its suburbs are home to over 21 million people. It's the largest city in India and one of the most welcoming. Although impossible to explore in a few days, certain places are not to be missed. Some of the main districts include South Mumbai which is also the most visited neighbourhood, South Central Mumbai with its upmarket atmosphere and beautiful architecture and the lesser-known North Mumbai where you'll find some of the city's best beaches.
Locals tend to be friendly and many speak English. Your hotel receptionist and staff are on hand to offer suggestions and advice to help you make the most of your stay in this exceptional and truly fascinating city.
Hotels in South Mumbai are close to many of the city's best sights and attractions. Look for hotels within easy reach of the suburban railway route if you are keen to venture off the beaten path. However, it's best to avoid rush hour when trains can be packed. Alternatively, rent a car in Mumbai or ask your hotel staff about chauffeur driven cars that enable you to explore the Kala Ghoda district of South Mumbai with its exquisite colonial buildings or take in the view from the Bandra Worli Sea Link. This spectacular bridge spans the Arabian Gulf from Worli to Bandra and on to the suburbs. It measures 5,600 metres in length and the views of the city at night are well worth the drive.
Visit the striking Nehru Centre to see work by some of India's best up and coming artists or spend the day at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalaya (Prince of Wales Museum) in the Kala Ghoda district of South Mumbai. There are dozens of hotels to choose from within walking distance of many internationally recognised galleries and museums.
If you enjoy wide-open spaces, Mumbai is one of the few cities in the world to have a national park within its boundaries. Sanjay Gandhi National Park is a welcome escape from the bustle of Mumbai and it's as popular with locals as it is with visitors. The park is also home to the ancient Kanheri Caves, which are at least 2,500 years old and carved out of the rocky cliffs. Alternatively, head up to the Malabar Gardens for impressive views over Marine Drive.
Finally, no visit to Mumbai would be complete without sampling the local cuisine. Portuguese, French and British influences, as well as, traditional Indian cookery have resulted in some of the tastiest curries and seafood dishes you will ever try. Many hotels have their own restaurants, but you can rest assured that there are plenty of restaurants ranging from chic and trendy to local favourites just a short distance from your hotel in the heart of Mumbai. This diverse and vibrant city is perfect for a break at almost any time of year and, with BudgetAir on hand to help you source our best possible deals, there has never been a better time to visit.
