It's also easy to get out and about and enjoy the great outdoors, with skiing and lake activities close by.
Few cities do café culture quite as well as Zagreb. In fact, it's often said that everything in Croatia takes place over a coffee, whether it's business decisions or affairs of the heart. Head to the main square at Bana Jelačića and find a seat at one of the many busy cafes. There's no take-away here, instead enjoy a long sit down as you watch the people go by. When it comes to dining out, travellers are rarely disappointed. Italian influence abounds and a number of excellent pizzerias co-exist with traditional restaurants. A great place to step back in time is a visit to the Stari Fijaker 900 beer and dining hall where tradition prevails. Those looking for something fancy should dine at the critically acclaimed Zinfandels.
The city is home to a number of art galleries most notably the Museum of Contemporary Art which is housed in a striking modern building. With work by Belgian artist Carsten Holler and Croatia's most well-known living artist Sanja Iveković, this is a mecca for modern art lovers but certainly still worth a walk around for anyone as entrance is free. If you are lucky enough to visit the Museum of Contemporary Art on a summer Saturday you may be able to catch one of the weekly free concerts on the roof. Further art can be enjoyed at the Croatian Association of Artists, where an eclectic collection is housed.
Past love affairs are commemorated at the Museum of Broken Relationships. This exhibit once toured the world but has settled in the quirky and vibrant heart of Zagreb. Make sure you pop in and take some time to remember those old flames or perhaps head to the confessional to share your thoughts and memories.
Not many travellers include a visit to an old cemetery as part of their itinerary to a vibrant European city, but Mirogoj isn't just any cemetery. Located a ten minute bus ride north, a visit here is also an opportunity to take a breather from the buzz of the city centre. Often cited as the most beautiful cemetery in European, Mirogoj is home to numerous sculptures and artfully designed tomb, as well as a charming mortuary whose arcades and cupolas have been partially returned to nature.
Those looking for an authentic local experience should head to the colourful Dolac Market. Traditionally a fruit and vegetable market, there are now stalls selling local honey or small handmade crafts so it's a great place to pick up souvenirs as well. If you want to find the higher-end fashion stores then head to the beautiful Oktogon Passage.
In the winter months it's easy to get out of the city for a day's skiing on Mount Medvednica, which is just a tram ride away. In summer locals and visitors alike flock to the Jarun Lake, just to the south of the centre. Take advantage of the boating, swimming and windsurfing as well as a number of lakeside discos to party at till dawn.
