Like all world cities, Rio is filled with annual traditional and cultural events.
The year begins on December 31, when Brazilians dressed in white flock to Copacabana beach for the annual party. At night, fireworks light the sky. In town, restaurants and hotels stay open, offering meals and buffets to revellers.
In February, the annual Rio carnival precedes the beginning of Lent. The celebrations consist of a number of parades, the most famous being the Cordao do Bola Preta in the centre of the city. For a smaller parade with a Christian flavour, go to the Suvaco de Cristo in the Botanic Garden.
Bonfires light up the sky as citizens celebrate the days of St Anthony, St John and St Peter. In parks, squares and plazas, couples carry out the ancient tradition of leaping over flames. All festivities end in a display of fireworks.
The citizens join with the rest of the country in celebrating the Independence Day of Brazil. The feast is marked by a military parade in the town, and other cultural events.
