EVA Air is a popular airline, which is based at Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport, near the Taiwanese capital, Taipei. Taiwan's largest passenger carrier, EVA serves over 12 million travellers every year.
As its motto "Sharing the world" indicates, the company schedules a wide variety of routes, including services from Toronto Pearson and Vancouver airports, as well as Anchorage, San Francisco, Seattle, New York JFK, Newark, Houston, and various other US hubs.
The company is owned by the Evergreen Group - a major Taiwanese business group. It has also struck global agreements to code share via Star Alliance membership. This allows passengers to arrange flexible multi-leg journeys with 26 carriers, including Air Canada.
EVA maintains a fleet of 82 planes, which includes a mix of Airbus A321 and Boeing 777-300 models. This blend ensures that the company is well setup to serve long haul travellers, with plenty of space on-board, and numerous cabin classes.
Overall, EVA Air is known for its customer service and safety record, with zero major incidents since it was formed in 1991. It has a 5-star rating with SkyTrax (the highest possible), and regularly wins prizes for Business Class service, on-board amenities, wine lists, and Economy Class catering. So it's a strong carrier all round- and a great option for Canadians who are headed to East Asia.
Regular customers can also join the Infinity Mileage scheme - EVA's frequent flyer program. Infinity lets you earn miles, which can be cashed in for flights, upgrades, and accommodation.
Comfort is a core aspect of EVA's services, and the airline offers a range of options. Possible cabin classes include Laurel (First), Business, Premium Economy, and Economy, with the benefits varying according to ticket prices.
All passengers with EVA Air enjoy high-quality food and drink, including vegetarian meals, and dishes that conform to religious diets, which need to be booked 24 hours prior to departing. The cuisine on offer tends to focus on East Asian cooking, including breakfasts like Chinese porridge, but western food is also served - and the portions are very generous by global standards.
EVA Air Laurel/Business Class
Most regular Business Class seats with EVA will have a seat pitch of 96.5 cm (38 in), although more luxurious mini-suites and seats are available in Royal Laurel and Premium Laurel classes. Business Class passengers enjoy 26.9 cm (10.6 in) screens, personal power outlets, and VIP Lounge access on the ground. Laurel passengers can go even further, viewing movies and TV on 38 cm (15 in) touchscreens.
EVA Air Economy Classes
Travelers with EVA can choose either Premium or Standard Economy classes. Seat pitches vary, but should be between 81-82 cm (32-33 in). However, Premium tickets ensure extra leg room and adjustable seats. All Economy travelers can watch entertainment on 26.9 cm (10.6 in) screens, and all seats are made from comfortable memory foam, which adapts to the body of the sitter. So comfort is virtually ensured.
Wi-Fi on EVA Air services
EVA provides Wi-Fi connectivity on almost all of its flights, and connections are supplied by Panasonic Avionics. Plans need to be purchased before or during flights, and different speeds and data limits are available.
Online check-in starts 484 hours before flights leave, and continutes until 90 minutes before boarding begins.
EVA Air recommends that all travellers arrive at the check-in desk at least 1 hour before flying (when in-person check-in terminates).
Business Class
Travelers in Laurel and Business classes can check in 2 items of luggage, each one weighing less than 32 kg (70 lb).
Travelers in both classes can take on-board 2 carry-on bags, weighing less than 7 kg (15 lbs).
Economy Class
Premium Economy class passengers are allowed to check in 2 pieces of luggage, each weighing less than 28 kg (62 lbs).
Economy passengers can check in 2 items of luggage, each one weighing less than 23 kg (50 lbs).
In both classes, passengers can take a single carry-on bag on-board, and this must weigh less than 7 kg (15 lbs).
Checked items must have total dimensions of less than 158 cm (62 in).
Carry-on items must measure less than 23 x 36 x 56 cm (9 x 14 x 22 in), or have maximum dimensions of 115cm (45 in).
In many cases, travelers who check in oversized baggage or need to transport extra luggage will have to pay supplementary fees. However, members of EVA Air's Infinity and Star Alliance Gold members can take an extra item of checked luggage as long as it weighs less than 23kg (50lbs).
Excess baggage fees will also apply to irregularly-shaped items like sports equipment and many musical instruments. Travelers are advised to notify EVA before they travel if they are carrying sensitive equipment, so that damage can be avoided.
Finally, every adult can take a single infant aged between 7 days and 2 years, free of charge. Bassinets can be ordered if needed, as can baby meals. However, an extra seat booking will be required if babies have to occupy a car seat.
